Kalire - A Bridal Ornament

Kalire are yet another set of ornaments worn by Punjabi Brides, which further adds color to the overall wedding attire.

Balkaran & Mandy-192.jpg

These are hanging ornaments worn on the hands, usually friends and sister-in-law tie Kalire to bride’s hands. They hang like beautiful chandeliers and come in a variety of colors to match bridal outfit. Kalire are encrusted with dried coconut and dried beetle nuts

Traditionally they are worn by the bride for 40 days after the wedding. Newlywed brides then don’t have to do any household work with big, jingling ornaments. Smart women.

To take those off, there is a tradition that bride rubs her hands against each other to drop the Kalire on the heads of unmarried girls, and who so ever gets the Kalire first is expected to get married within a short period.

This is similar to western weddings, where in , towards the end of the wedding celebrations, when the bride is about to depart, she throws her bridal bouquet to a group of unmarried girls following her, and whichever girl catches it is expected to get married next.

What an amazing similarity of this traditional practice, though these cultures are so different. This again reinforces the common human essence underlying everything, only expression is different. If only perpetrators of hate could understand that.

Jay & Deepika, A South Indian Wedding

Deepika & Jay's wedding was solemnized at the Jain Temple, Milipitas, CA, in the company of some close friends and families.  The colorful , religious wedding represented so many rituals part of a quintessential South Indian wedding. Jay is Electrical Engineer and Deepika is a Physio Therapist. Both these professionals make a very good looking couple. Though they come across as a little shy couple , the chemistry between the couple can be seen towards to the end of the album. Best thing about them is that they are so humble, down to earth and great to work with. I enjoyed shooting the wedding. In fact the day Deepika's sister Smitha contacted me for this wedding, I got excited. And that excitement shows up in the images here.

The guests were given a detailed card explaining the meaning and significance behind all the rituals that were performed.  I would specifically like to point out ritual of  "Talambralu" ,  wherein the bride and groom shower one another with pearls and talambralu(rice mixed with saffron and turmeric). This denotes the couple's desire for happiness, enjoyment and contentment. Initially , they take turns to shower the rice on each other, and as it progresses it gets more entertaining when they begin to compete with each other. We married souls  know that this competition then continues in many ways in the married life, and that i guess is the fun of  it.

Enjoy the images.

This was a fusion of  Gujrati and Punajbi wedding.  Mona hails from a Gujrati family and Anant is Punjabi. Their love story culminated into this beautiful wedding.  I shot their engagement session in San Franciso and then they got married in Toronto. They also had a reception there . And then second one at San Ramon Marriott.  Sharing some pictures from the same. Thanks to my friends Debbie and Bhavan for helping out with shooting this wedding. The videography (should be out soon) was by another good friend Jesse Johal and the beautiful wedding theme and decoration was by our vada

Anoop & Vina

Anoop and Vina's wedding at Montreal was lots of  fun . The traditional ceremony was in a gurudwara which is an old church building with a beautiful interior . The reception hall was also tastefully decorated and lit....a photographer's paradise.  Food was sumptuous and coupled with great selection of drinks. Everyone had a blast, danced till 3 am. It was fun dancing and taking picutres. Got a chance to go around Montreal as well. Anoop and Vina make a fabulous couple.
